Data Sharing Principles in Digilab

30.03.2024

Digilab provides an opportunity to explore various types of cultural data, including both public materials and those protected by copyright. The National Library's general copyright principles and license descriptions are detailed on library's website and in a related document (in Estonian). More information about data requests can be found on the Digilab's data requests page. Below are the most common terms of use for the data.

Public materials

Materials labeled as “Public Domain – https://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/mark/1.0/” or those with the Creative Commons (CC) license CC0 are not protected by copyright. The public domain mark indicates that no known copyright restrictions apply to the material. The CC0 license places the material in the public domain; more details about CC0 can be found on the Creative Commons website. Both allow free copying, modification, distribution, and use for scientific or commercial purposes. Attribution to the National Library is encouraged but not required.

Examples of public materials:

Copyright-protected materials

Works protected by copyright may be used for research purposes, including text and data mining. A contract must be signed to use such materials.

Partially copyright-protected materials:

  • Newspapers in the DEA portal labeled "Free access - restricted use. This publication's copyright protection has expired but the rights of works contained in the publication may be protected. The works may be used for private purposes or study and research purposes. In other cases please ascertain that the copyright term has expired." Access to the full texts of this kind of newspapers is described on the subpage: https://digilab.rara.ee/tooriistad/ligipaas-dea-tekstidele/#uagb-tabs__tab1.

Copyright-protected materials:

  • DIGAR materials marked “Copyrighted,” sometimes with additional notes.
  • DEA portal materials labeled "Restricted access. Access to full texts is provided via authorised workstations in the National Library of Estonia, Archival Library of the Literary Museum, Tallinn University of Technology Library, University of Tartu Library and Tallinn University Academic Library".
